What are Porcelain (Dental) Veneers?

Many people desire a brighter, cleaner, more attractive smile, but have chipped, stained, discolored, unevenly spaced, or even slightly crooked front teeth. Often, porcelain veneers or laminates can provide these people with a completely new-looking smile in just a few simple dental appointments.

Porcelain Veneers are also contact lens-thin and are placed over existing teeth  for permanent cosmetic solution for stained, chipped, discolored or misaligned teeth.

If this sounds like you, we will be glad to help evaluate your specific situation, listen to the exact changes you have in mind, and help you visualize your cosmetic dental goals.

This may involve:

  • Diagnostic 'Wax-Up'. the dentist will make models of your teeth and mount them in a mouth simulator. The teeth are then altered and rebuilt with wax or resin in a more ideal form. This not only allows the dentist and patient to arrive at the most agreeable shape for the teeth, but also serves as a model for the provisional or temporary crowns and as a guide for the dental lab in porcelain veneer construction.
  • Photos of Similar Case Outcomes. See how porcelain veneers and cosmetic dentistry have changed the smiles of others.
  • Computer Enhancement. Photos of your smile are altered with digital imaging to provide you with several options prior to performing the actual dental procedure. It is always our goal to give you a predictable result

Fortunately, most porcelain veneers can be applied in two or three simple appointments. The initial treatment visit is where an impression is made of your teeth and sent to the dental laboratory for professional Wax-Up.

The second treatment visit is where we study the Wax-Up together for the our goal smile and the teeth are reshaped to make room for the porcelain veneers and final impressions taken. Your teeth are then covered with a provisional veneer which protects the tooth and maintains a good appearance until the final product is seated.

The Provisional veneers give a us a feed back as to what the final veneers will look like as they are copy of the wax-up. At this time, we can make final changes we look at the provisional veneers.

There are various types of porcelain veneers utilizing different types of porcelain and different manufacturing techniques. You may have heard of Empress and Lumineers among many others. There are pros and cons to all of the different types. Your dentist will be able to suggest the type that is right for you. The porcelain veneers take about 2-3 weeks to make and are cemented to place at the third appointment.

Afterwards, you'll just need to clean and floss your new smile daily, visit us regularly for professional care and maintenance, and consider wearing a night-guard to prevent any accidental gritting or grinding pressure while you sleep. Remember that porcelain is basically glass and should be treated with care.

The investment for porcelain veneers varies widely. It's important to keep in mind that a dentist who spends the time necessary to get the result you are looking for, keeps up with the latest techniques through education, and maintains a first rate clinical facility may be more expensive than many other dentists. Fees for porcelain veneers range from $1,000.00 to $2,000.00 and up per tooth. Many offices offer financial options to help their patients manage the expense.
